Chassis View – Alain Prost’s Equipe Renault Elf RE30B – Caesar’s Palace GP 1982

renault.chassis.prost.helmet.signAnother 120mm scan, this time it shows the aluminum chassis of Prost’s Renault.  If you compare it to the carbon fiber McLaren MP4/1B shown in the February 6th post (https://poeticsofspeed.com/2014/02/06/mclaren-mp41b-carbon-fiber-composite-chassis-caesars-palace-grand-prix-1982/) you can see the transition into the modern era of race car construction.   The clearly evident hand made look of the Renault’s aluminum panels with rivets and the welded steel suspension may be old school to our contemporary eyes but I think it has an elegant craftsmanship and beauty all its own.  The McLaren resembles a spaceship while the Renault recalls the classic era of aviation.
